WHILE
the political leaders at the G8 summit promised to get more
of the world's children into education by 2015, fundraisers
in Kimbolton can say they have been doing so for four years.
Later this month, they plan to continue the work, but need
more willing volunteers to take part in the Kimbolton Charity
Cycle Ride.
All of the money raised is used to assist with the education
of children in Dangriga, Belize. The country's government
has insufficient funds to fully support the education system.
Last year about 175 riders took part in rides from three
miles right up to a more challenging 100 miles. The event
raised more than £6,000.
The
2007 ride will take place on Sunday, June 24, starting from
the Castle Green in Kimbolton, and this time the organisers
are hoping to raise £20,000.
Cyclists taking part can choose the challenge they fancy
the most (or just feel comfortable with).
The distances start with a three-mile, off road treasure
hunt for young children, and also include 10, 25, 50 and 100
miles for the fitter, more dedicated rider.
There is also a rough, 15-mile off-road ride for mountain
bikers and horses.A spokesman for the event said: "All
we ask is that you get sponsorship from family and friends
as 100 per cent of the money donated goes directly to the
charity."
The Dangriga area of Belize was chosen as the Claretian
Fathers in Buckden Towers set up a mission there to help the
everyday lives of the people.
Within
the Dangriga parish there are 12 schools with more than 4,000
students.
The Children in Belize charity assists by providing buildings,
sanitation services, electricity supplies, books and other
financial support.
The ride itself is fully supported by a back-up team of helpers.
Route maps and notes will be provided for all riders.
There will also be prizes for people who raise the most sponsorship.
